The workforce is more mobile and increasingly work can be done from anywhere, so flexible work is a real option for more of us.

  • My 23 year old daughter who was in her first role in HR recently took her first steps towards a first career move and somewhat dauntingly came to Dad for advice. Not feeling under any pressure at all I reflected on the wisdom that I would impart. It suddenly struck me that in recent years so much of the advice we, as career professionals provide is based on traditional corporate structures, career paths and development but the landscape for first generation career movers is changing at quite a rate.

  • The Spring Statement from the British Government, also known as the "mini-budget", is one of the two statements HM Treasury makes each year to Parliament upon publication of economic forecasts. Uncertainty around Brexit overshadows all the Chancellor plans and he made a plea “to exit the EU in an orderly way, and create a relationship that allows Britain to flourish”.

  • National Careers Week (NCW) is a celebration of careers guidance and free resources in education across the UK. By historic standards, unemployment levels for young people are low but many employers claim that they struggle to recruit young, work-ready staff as young people are ill prepared with the basic skills needed for employment. Unemployment while young is linked to long-term reductions in wages, increased chances of subsequent periods of unemployment, and poorer health outcomes. We really need robust careers guidance to be promoted and celebrated in education.

  • I believe if you hear about a subject or topic more than three times it is something that needs your attention. This is how I found myself ordering the book ‘Atomic Habits’ by James Clear. I had heard James talking on more than three podcasts, so I thought it would be good to find out about his philosophy on building good habits and breaking bad ones. It also coincided with New Year, which always gets me thinking about my focus for the year ahead.
